When building a laptop there aren’t many options for customization. And finding information can be very difficult as there is very little information available on the subject. A number of barebones notebooks are available through online vendors, but it’s unlikely you’ll find one at your local electronics store. When choosing a barebones model, remember that “barebones” laptops are not exactly bare. Any model you choose will have built-in components you cannot readily swap out. Consider this when choosing a barebones model: graphics card support, processor and the size of the screen. Do you want a laptop that is fast but runs hot? Are you willing to pay more for a power-saving, lower heat mobile chip? For gamers, a good built-in graphics card is ok, but you can also choose a notebook that is easily upgradable. The screen size will determine the portability of your new laptop; decide whether you want a large, but heavy screen or something smaller and lighter. And most importantly, check very carefully that all of your components are compatible with your motherboard.

Take a full inventory of your parts before you start building. You will need a CPU, graphics card and hard drive… and some memory. A wireless card should also be on the list of those must-have items, as a laptop without internet capability seems odd in today’s world; you’ll need a Mini-PCIe wireless card. The tools you should have on hand are a couple of Phillips-head screwdrivers (large and small and preferably magnetic), some needle nose pliers, and some baggies to help keep track small parts as you work.

Make sure you do plenty of research beforehand just to make sure that instructions are included with your barebones or available on the manufacturer’s website. You don’t want to resort to trial-and-error; this could be potentially disastrous and costly.

After building, you’ll need to install the necessary software; this includes the operating system and drivers for the components.

It may be a bit of a challenge, but there is nothing more rewarding that showing off your new laptop and telling the world “I built it myself!”
